This Gin Rummy is a small browser version of the classic two-player card game in which you sit across from a computer opponent named Joshua. Each hand you try to arrange your cards into sets and runs faster than Joshua does, and the first side to reach 100 points over several hands wins the game. You always take the first turn of every hand.

The basics of gin rummy

Gin rummy uses a standard 52-card deck. Cards combine in two ways:

  • Sets: three or four cards of the same rank, such as three sevens.
  • Runs: three or more cards of one suit in sequence, such as the 4, 5 and 6 of hearts.

Any card in your hand that is not part of a set or run is called deadwood. Face cards count as 10, aces as 1 and the other cards at their face value. The aim is to get your deadwood total as low as possible.

How a turn works here

  1. Press the deal button to hand out the cards.
  2. Sort your hand by dragging cards with the mouse. Grouping them by suit or by matching rank makes your combinations easier to see.
  3. Draw one card: either the top card of the discard pile or the top card of the deck, using the Take from deck button.
  4. Discard one card onto the pile to finish your turn, or knock instead if your hand is good enough.

A reshuffle button sits next to the deal button once the cards are out. The game window also has an Instructions link to an outside rules page if you want the full official rules.

Knocking and scoring

You may knock, which ends the hand, only when your deadwood adds up to ten points or less; if it is higher, the game tells you that you do not have enough to knock. After a knock both hands are shown, and Joshua's deadwood is compared with yours. Some of the loser's loose cards can be laid off onto the knocker's sets and runs, which reduces their count.

  • If you knock with lower deadwood, you score the difference between the two totals.
  • Knock with zero deadwood (going gin) and you get a 20-point bonus on top.
  • If you knock but Joshua's deadwood is equal or lower, he undercuts you and scores the difference plus 10.

The running score for both players sits at the top of the screen, and a game-over panel appears when someone passes 100.

Tips

  • Get rid of high cards that are not close to a combination early. A lone king costs you 10 points if Joshua knocks.
  • The points from each hand are kept in your browser, so you can close the tab and continue a game to 100 later.
  • Knocking early with a few points of deadwood is often better than waiting for gin, because every extra turn gives Joshua a chance to knock first.
  • Before knocking, check whether your loose cards could be laid off on his melds. A low knock can still be undercut.

Questions about Gin Rummy

Is Gin Rummy unblocked at school?

The first player to reach 100 points across several hands wins the game.

What bonuses are there in Gin Rummy?

Going gin, knocking with no deadwood at all, adds a 20-point bonus. If your opponent undercuts your knock, they score the difference plus 10.
